The wax care guide

Resilient and waterproof, wax is a match for even British weather. Reproofing your garment annually will keep it gorgeous and you dry. Here’s how…

Clean it

Swish away dust and dirt with a soft brush, then wipe the whole thing down with a damp cloth or sponge. DON’T use hot (or even warm) water, soaps, detergents, bleach, washing machines, tumble dryers or dry cleaning.

Soften it

You’ll need to melt your proofing wax first. Use a well-aimed hairdryer, or stand the tin in warm water (it’s ready to use when it’s uniformly liquid – around 20 minutes).

Wax it

Lay your item on a clean, flat surface and smooth out any wrinkles. Using a clean cloth or sponge, rub in the melted wax with small, circular strokes. Apply a little at a time so the fabric has a chance to absorb it, and extra on seams and well-worn areas.

Dry it

Hang it up in a well-ventilated area (away from heat sources) to dry naturally. The day after it’s completely dried, check it over and spot-treat it if necessary. It should have a soft, semi-matt finish.
